Agency Graduate, Henning Schou

Batch 2007

My background

After graduating from Business College in 2005, I decided to try the life at sea, and started as a Maritime Officers Cadet, studying engineering and navigational classes. After being at sea for five months I realized that this was not what I wanted to do, however I still had the interest in Shipping, and therefore I decided to apply for a trainee position with Maersk Broker Agency.

Reason for being interested in the Maersk Broker Agency Trainee Programme

As the job offers a lot varying tasks, and not "confining" one to only work behind a desk. At the same time you have to work independently, and have to take responsibility from day one.

My thoughts on the programme having gone through it

I enjoyed the programme, as you are able to combine the on-the-job training with concentrated theoretical education in Esbjerg, where you are able to exchange experiences with fellow trainees from other parts of the shipping business.

The theoretical part is very broad, whereas the on-the-job training are more focused on the agency business.

Where has it brought me so far

I am at the moment stationed in Stockholm as head of the office, handling all types of vessels in and around Stockholm.

My future plans with my education

I study with Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers, in order to attain a deeper theoretical understanding of Shipping.

My immediate future plans are to develope our Stockholm office, and further ahead to be working with the developement of the entire Maersk Broker Agency.

Batch 2011 - Leffler, Gothenburg

My background

After I finished Upper secondary school I drove an ice cream truck for a few years in order to finance travels to Australia and south-east asia. After a few years it was time to pick a career and I found a program at Chalmers University of Technology, Shipping & Logistics in Gothenburg.

I had never been in contact with shipping before and I was pleased to find out that it really interested me. In May 2011 year I took my Bachelor Degree.

Reason for being interested in the Maersk Broker Agency Trainee Programme

During my second year at University I had the opportunity to do an internship at a Ship Agency in Gothenburg for 8 weeks which led to a summer job and freelance assistance during autumn and winter. When I got closer to get my degree I started to look for other openings in the ship agency market and found that Leffler/MBA needed a trainee in Gothenburg.

I wanted to learn more about shipping and the profession as a ship agent as well as the basics of the profession and then be able to develop these skills for future challenges.

My thoughts on the programme having gone through it

When I started at the office in Gothenburg it was hands-on work from the beginning and after only a few months I felt that I've learned a lot and was able to work independently. I am involved in all the different parts and aspects that a ship agents meets every day.

I am very pleased to be a part of the Leffler/MBA trainee program

My future plans with my education

My plans are for the moment to take my degree and get employed in one of the many Maersk Broker Agency offices.

In Gothenburg we mostly handle tanker vessels, why it would be interesting for me to try and work with a different segment at another MBA office.

Agency Graduate, Juuso Matias Juslenius

Batch 2009

My background

I graduated high school in 2007 wherafter I worked with service and sales in the hotel & restaurant sector. In 2008, as a Finnish citizen, I left for Finland to do my military service in the Finnish army. When returning to Denmark I applied for a Ship Agency Trainee position with Maersk Broker Agency which I started 1. June 2009.

Reason for being interested in the Maersk Broker Agency Trainee Programme

The idea of working in a "hands-on" shipping environment and be a part of the operational team from day one seemed appealing from the beginning.

Furthermore I saw the opportunity to make a career in the shipping businnes when working with an international well-known company, with competent employees - from whom I would be able to achieve a solid knowledge about the business and receive a competent support in the every day operation.

My thoughts on the programme having gone through it

I am very pleased to have had the opportunity of being situated at our major offices in Denmark and Sweden during my trainee period. This has given me the chance to work with many different segments of the agency business within Maersk Broker Agency.

My future plans with my education

After graduation I have worked some months with Projects & Forwarding, before taking up the position as Personal Assistant for our Managing Director.
